How does one solicit an illustrator/artist for custom work?
I am a fan of the work of a well-respected and successful illustrator and think she would be perfect to design a logo and a few other graphics for my new startup. She takes solicitations via e-mail but I have never solicited custom work from a professional artist before. Should I ask for a quote? Make an offer? I am sure her rates are high but I don't want to overshoot or undershoot. How do I approach an artist about a potential project?

So both tips are based on physical reality, though reality and racing sometimes are like oil and water and just don't go together. A classic example of how the leg tip is not always accurate is the race between Seabiscuit and War Admiral. War Admiral towered over the biscuit, but those long legs didn't win the race. My advice is to forget the tips and learn how to handicap the races like a pro. A good friend of mine and a heck of a handicapper once told me, at the track you gotta' be deaf and dumb, real dumb. He was cashing a good ticket at the time so I guess he might have known what he was talking about, or was that another tip?
